I vividly remember the first time my daughter shaved her legs. it was a bittersweet experience for me. i was excited that she was beginning the transformation into a beautiful young woman right before my eyes, but of course i wanted her to forever be my little girl. However, there she stood in front of me, an eleven year old girl, asking me somewhat timidly if I could teach her how to shave. Because shaving is part of my daily routine and I have been doing it for many, many years, I had to put some thought in to the best way to teach my girl the most efficient and safest way to shave. I always shave in the shower but I thought that might be too complicated for a beginner.
So I googled it which proved to be quite helpful. First, I made sure she had a clean razor and shaving cream - One Slade Natural Shave Cream (oneslade.com) works best as it was formulated especially with tweens and teens in mind. It contains no harsh chemical or preservatives. It also has ingredients such as green tea extract which aids in moisturizing skin, chamomile flower extract which promotes smooth, healthy skin due to its antibacterial properties and willow bark extract which exfoliates the skin. As most parents would agree, healthy habits start young, and it is important to educate our kids about what they put in and on their bodies. Avoiding products that contain unnecessary ingredients that can be damaging to our skin and our health is really important.
Anyway - back to the shaving. My daughter applied the shaving cream generously to her legs. She held the razor in her dominate hand and she rested her leg on the vanity. Slowly and gently, without pushing too hard on the razor, she guided the razor up her leg. She continued to do this with some coaching from me ( much to her chagrin), as I explained that she had to be very careful around her ankles and knees. She rinsed the razor with warm water every few minutes. She took her time and remarked that she didn’t think it would be this easy. She remarked that the shaving cream was helpful because it showed her the places she had missed with the razor. She continued this until both legs were clean shaven. Another milestone reached! The smile on her face after she finished melted my heart. My baby girl was growing up and I couldn’t have been more proud of her. Another step to becoming a teenager!
